Today marks a shift or a new era in our chronological journey from even to eternity.

Solomon has died and the once unified nation of Israel will now split.

All the times you've heard the terms split kingdom or northern kingdom and southern kingdom or Israel and Judah,

our chapters today are going to explain the details of what happened and who ended up on each side.

As we walk through our chapters today, we will practically talk through the historical implications as well as the newly enthroned Jeroboam and his downfall.

And if you scratched your head about the narrative concerning the man of God and the old prophet, have no fear, we will chat through that as well.

But what we must keep in mind today is that God is sovereign and he sees the whole of history all at once.

Nothing surprises him and nothing negates his word.

Though we may not always understand what is happening, we trust that our God is holy and he is the one who calls us to obedience.

With that as our foundation, let's get started.

In 1 Kings 12, we read about Reha Boam, Solomon's son taking the throne.

While in Shechem, he summons the assembly of Israel, which basically means all the elders and family heads.

He also invited Jeroboam, who had fled to Egypt and he came and joined this assembly.

The assembly then asks the new king to lighten the burden of work inflicted by Solomon.

Reha Boam asks the advice of both the elders who served his father and the young men he grew up with.

The elders counsel him to lighten the burden while the young men encourage him to add to the burden.

Reha Boam showed a lack of wisdom and listened to the young men, thus angering the nation.
