Summary

"How long will it take for me to reach xx time?" "How long will it take until I start seeing results?" "How long will it take until I get faster?" Coach Montana Depasquale (@coachmontanadepasquale) joins the show to discuss how long it takes to get faster! Spoiler alert: it depends!

  • Why "how long until I see the results I want" isn't the right question you should ask
  • Why a race PR isn't the only way to determine "improvement"
  • Why training "harder" isn't always better
  • Periodizing your training properly for best results
  • Why can't I be in "peak" condition all the time?
  • Why "testing your fitness" during your taper will sabotage your race day
  • Why are my faster paces getting slower/feeling harder when I first start slowing down to easy effort on easy days?
  • Committing to the timeframe it takes

Montana DePasquale is a certified running coach, wife, and mom. She's passionate about providing runners with evidence-based info, helping them cut through the 'noise' of information overload and misinformation. She's also passionate about getting more runners strength training, and providing good quality of care to pregnant and postpartum women runners. She's been running for over 15 years herself and is a former D1 track and cross country runner. Prior to working in the online space, she's coached at the high school and college levels. She loves helping runners go after their big goals, whether they're sub-3:00 marathoners or brand new to the sport run-walkers.

When I became a new runner at the age of 29, I had so many questions, but it felt like I was on my

you a better, smarter, faster, runner.

There's no question too simple and no topic too complex.

So let's get started.

My guest this week is Montana-D-Pasquil, certified running coach and former Division I

0:37.6

about things that are really important for us to understand on like a fundamental level. And one of

0:43.5

those things that she talks about often and is such an important concept for runners to really

0:47.4

internalize is this idea of how long it actually takes or how long does it take to see the

0:53.8

progress that you are looking for

0:56.0

in your running. Running is not an overnight process. It takes forever. Like as long as you keep

1:01.8

running, you are going to be improving in some capacity. There's no end game. There's no final.

1:06.3

Like, oh, this is it. You are always striving to become better and better and better. So this entire

1:12.2

conversation is about how long does it actually take to become a faster runner? It doesn't happen

1:18.0

overnight. It's about playing the long game. And you need a lot of patience when it comes to

1:24.4

that. Montana, welcome to the show. I'm excited to have you here. Hi, thank you so much. Thanks for having me. So, like, all my guests, first up, I want to hear about you as a runner. I want to hear your origin story. How did you become a runner? And how did you become a coach? Yeah. So I started running. I've been running for a long time. It almost feels like

1:45.9

it's hard to remember a time before running was in my life. But I started running in middle school.

1:51.6

And I had played softball all growing up. I played softball for about nine years. I remember eighth grade,

1:56.7

I was playing for my middle school team. And we would have to do warm-up laps around the field,

2:03.2

and I would be running as slow as I possibly could and be way out in front of everyone else.
