Look back at my early childhood and I think about my early

ankleings with the trans experience and one of my earliest

memories just in life in general was I was probably about

three or four years old and I very distinctly remember

asking my mother, when am I going to turn into a girl?

Hi, welcome. This is Pride Month and the issue that we're going to be

talking about today is transgender. I have some really great

interviews for you but before we get there I want to

read to you some things that perhaps you're not aware of.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has estimated that there are more than

two million members of the transgender community across the

United States. A 2016 Pew study says that three out of every 10

adults in the United States personally knows someone who is

trans. 2020 was the most deadly year for people who identify as

trans with at least 44 deaths. Trans people face a legal system

that often does not protect them from discrimination based on their

gender identity. Despite a recent US Supreme Court decision

that makes it clear that trans people are legally protected from discrimination

in the workplace. There is still no comprehensive federal

non-discrimination law that includes gender identity.

Trans people experience violence at rates far greater than the average person.
