This is Maria Farmer.

She's standing in front of a large wooden easel in her living room slash art studio.

The room is open and airy, flooded with light from Florida ceiling windows that overlook a beautiful lake out front.

So we're in my studio.

It's a new studio for me.

It's very well lit, which is such a treat.

And so I'm taking advantage of that for a couple reasons.

One thing for this series, I really want it to be vibrant.

Maria is working with a new set of soft pastels,

thumming through a wooden box for the perfect base color to use in a portrait that she's drawing.

I want to draw people's attention to it.

And I also feel like there's a lot of strength and power in this, you know, being very colorful.

Once on the path to a promising art career, only in recent years has Maria been able to stand before an easel again.
