And we want to spend five minutes every day, journeying through the Bible from start to finish,

and exploring how all of it points to Jesus.

Hey everyone, my name is Miranda, and today we are looking at first Samuel 10-12.

These are exciting and groundbreaking chapters, as Israel is receiving their first king.

But they are also somber chapters, if you know the entire redemptive story of the Bible.

There will be some righteous kings in Israel's history,

0:45.0

but many of them will lead the people into spiritual rebellion and wickedness.

0:50.0

This will eventually lead to their destruction and exile.

But we have a few years until then.

Let's enjoy some of the happy beginnings that the narrative gives us while we can.

Samuel anoints Saul with a flask of oil at the beginning of chapter 10,

1:08.0

which was a sign of holy consecration.

1:11.0

It also would be a symbolic representation of how the Lord was about to anoint Saul with his spirit.

When Saul left Samuel that day, before he is publicly proclaimed as king, God gave him a new heart.

As Saul meets a group of prophets who are prophesying, he prophesies among them,

because he is full of the spirit of God.

1:34.0

The Lord's mercy continues to be a theme here as we read this.

The Lord gives the man who the people are rejecting him for his very own spirit.

But just because the Lord is with Saul does not mean Saul is superhuman.

We see right away that he is a normal man who struggles with fear,

even though he appeared to be brave and strong.
