I will be with you for the books of 1st and 2nd Samuel and a few more books for the Bible later on.

I'm so excited to dive into these two historical narratives with you.

They are full of the most incredible stories of the history of the people of Israel

and the glorious reigns of their greatest kings, Saul, David, and Solomon.

Because these two books are historical narrative, we need to remember that the author of 1st and 2nd Samuel

is trying to tell us a history that has a purpose.

We will see that purpose all throughout the book.

But one thing to keep in mind is you read 1st Samuel as this.

Jesus is the true and better king.

There is no earthly king who will ever rival him.

The book of 1st Samuel opens by introducing us to a man named Elkina and his two wives, Hannah and Penina.

Penina had given Elkina children, but Hannah was barren.

Every time Elkina and his wives went to the tower knuckle to offer sacrifices,

Elkina would give Hannah a double portion because he loved her more than Penina.

So already we see a marriage full of strife, competition, and heartbreak.

And we've seen the situation before, do you remember?

All the way back in Genesis with Jacob and Rachel and Leah and things did not go so well there either.

But Hannah, in her distress, goes to where we all must go in our pain and suffering.
