A prosecutor told a court that within his personal luggage, there was about 1,948 garden ants packed in specialized test tubes.

A further 300 live ants were recovered concealed in three rolls of tissue paper with his luggage.

The species is protected under international biodiversity roles and has become popular among

collectors in Europe and Asia for whatever reason.

So investigators say the man is tied to a trafficking network that was just dismantled this past year, calling him the mastermind.
