Last time, we discussed the history of Russian and Soviet imperialism and colonialism. Today, we will talk about the great Russian scientists of history.

Before we start, I wanted to find what I view as a Russian scientist versus a Soviet one, as next time I will be covering those

scientists. The Russian ones were those who spent the majority of their careers under Zaris

rule and did not make any significant discoveries under the Soviets. Because of their control

by the Mongols, Russia missed out on a substantial part of the Renaissance

due to the lack of communications with Western Europe.

The Russian Renaissance, if you can even call it that, occurred beginning in the 17th century.

The first Russian scientist I could find was Vasily Nikitinich Tatachev,

born in 1686. Although his contemporaries scoffed his work, he is noted as the founder

of three Russian cities, Stavropol-on-Volga, now known as Tolgati, and Katerinaberg, and Perm.

Tachachev's influence was due in part to the rule of Peter the Great, who introduced

Western European thought into this backward Russian nation.

My criteria were that either they made a monumental discovery or led a truly remarkable life.

My first one, Mikhail Vasilyevich, Lomonosov, fits both requirements. Born in 1711, Lomonosov fits both requirements.

Born in 1711, Lomonosov is considered one of the greatest polymaths in Russian history as well as the rest of the world.
