Evgeny Pregozion is dead, says Moscow. What does the Pregozion mutiny, the Pregozion

Wagner group, the Pregozion reputation now dead, mean for modern Russia, for the Russian

Federation of Vladimir Putin and his lieutenants. I welcome Katrina Vennonov, the editorial director

and publisher of the Nation magazine, who has a 1500-word piece very carefully constructed

in this nation's issue about Pregozion, what we know about him, what we don't know about

him, and why it's important. Katrina spoke with Dr. Pavel Luzin, a senior fellow at the

Jamestown Foundation, and the professor said it this way, the rebellion, the mutiny in

June. Either it was part of a political battle inside the Kremlin, says the professor and

Pregozion was a frontman of a major conspiracy, or Russia is a failed state. Katrina, congratulations

a very good evening to you. I don't ask you to choose between those two, because I think

they could both be true at the same time. What did you learn in your research of Pregozion?

Why was he there? Why the mutiny? Do we know anything now that he's gone? Good evening

to you. Thank you. Well, we've known quite a bit for these last months. We've known that

by the way I agree with you, it's not either or, Dr. Luzin, it's all of the above, it

can be all of the above, but Pregozion has increasingly spoken out about the conduct

of the war in Ukraine. He's been highly critical, not in opposition, but in opposition to the

soft line, he believed much of the Kremlin was undertaking in terms of the battle, particularly

critical of the formal military structures, Shogu and his partner. Putin was slow to act

in a dangerous way. I think it's misunderstood sometimes that Putin, he is authoritarian, but

he's also someone who's like a coordinator. He appeared slow to react to the all important
