Tichan Zedko comes from a long line of Russian journalists.

My mom, she's a journalist as well.

My grandfather and my grandmother, they were writers.

And when I started, I realized that it is really interesting to tell the people what is

actually going on in the world.

Seeing Russians what's actually going on can be a balancing act.

And Tichan has been walking that line for his career.

Most recently, as editor-in-chief of TV Reign, Russia's only independent TV news channel

until last week.

I left the country because I was afraid that I could become the subject of a criminal

case because of this whole situation with military censorship in Russia after the beginning

of the war with Ukraine.

Last Tuesday, the Kremlin shut down TV Reign's website.

It was part of a broad media clampdown that also went after Echo of Moscow, Russia's

last independent radio station.

A leading light of independent media in Russia now silenced by the Kremlin.

And TV Reign's website is blocked.

All that's left is this stream on YouTube.

Now Russians can only get state-run TV and radio.

And Tichan says the future of independent media there is in doubt.

I think now the future is pretty dark.

Normal independent journalism is almost dead.
