And today our alert is about really a warning

that the discussion of nuclear warfare is becoming too prevalent,

too undisciplined.

There are aspects of it that are almost immature,

which would be all right, I guess, except mature can sometimes lead to

very significant escalation.

Let's do a little history here.

I mean, we've lived with the concept of mutually assured destruction

since at least the 1950s when the Soviet Union acquired the atomic bomb,

due to spying on the United States and infiltration of the Roosevelt

and Truman administrations.

I don't know that we focused on it as mutually assured destruction

until sometime toward the end of the Eisenhower administration,

which we had been in the late 50s, or possibly even in the early 60s,

with the coming of the Kennedy administration and Nikita Khrushchev.

It certainly was on everyone's mind during the Cuban invasion

that took place in 61.
