pay capital gains. But now, this New York Times article from March 19th really talks about

this could apply to sports trades, and it would dramatically affect teams where teams would face capital gains taxes every time they exchanged or trade highly paid players.

Think about all the highly paid players have been traded recently in all sports, including recently this year, in football, players like Jason Pierre Paul just last week.
