But first the big idea. A feud between Deputy Attorney General Rod

Rosenstein and former acting FBI director Andy McCabe dates back to Bob Mueller's May 2017 appointment as

Special Counsel. Just days after Mueller was tapped for that role, he found himself

drawn into a heated standoff between the two men.

Each argued that the other should recuse himself from the Russia probe.

At the time of the confrontation, tensions were running especially high at the FBI and the Justice Department.

President Trump had just fired Jim Comi and almost immediately afterward FBI officials had opened

a case into whether the president had obstructed justice.

Some of the administration eyed Rosenstein warily, not just because he was appointed by Trump,

but also because he had authored the memo that was used by the administration to justify Comi's termination.
