North Koreans face a level of physical and digital isolation and oppression that is almost, if not, unprecedented anywhere else in the world.

No one is allowed to leave the country without the government's permission.

Successfully fleeing North Korea requires a 3,000 mile journey unless you want to risk your life trying to cross from north to south over the DMZ.

China arrests any North Korean refugees and sends them back to North Korea, where they face extreme punishments such as beatings, forced labor, torture, and sentences to internment camps.
