Summary

This Wednesday Rishi Sunak gave a speech rolling back on the government’s Net Zero pledges, pushing back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035, scrapping plans to force landlords to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes, watering down the gas boiler phaseout (aiming for 80% rather than 100% by 2035), and ruling out plans for a seemingly unbeknownst meat tax.

Anoosh Chakelian is joined by Andrew Marr and Freddie Hayward to discuss where these plans have come from, what they mean for the Conservatives and Labour, and how they will divide public opinion.

Hi, I'm Anouche. I'm Andrew. And I'm Freddy. And this is the New Statesman's Politics

0:10.3

podcast. In this episode, we'll be discussing Rishi-Soonak's decision to delay key net zero

0:15.5

targets. Hello, I'm Anouche Kellyan, Britain editor of the New Statesman and host of this

0:29.2

podcast. And joining me in the studio, I have our political editor, Andrew Mah, and our

0:33.3

political correspondent, Freddy Hayward. So we're recording on Thursday morning, and at the

0:37.7

end of the day yesterday, Rishi-Soonak gave a speech rolling back on the government's net

0:42.0

zero pledges. And for those of our listeners who missed it, the main announcements were that

0:46.2

he pushed back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035. He scrapped

0:52.0

plans to force landlords to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes, watered down the gas

0:56.2

boiler phase out, anti-ruled out any behavior change measures like meat or flight taxes. Where's

1:01.9

all this come from, Andrew? Because you were reporting, actually, that the government was assuring

1:06.1

car companies that the scrapage would come about in 2016. They were assuring BMW as recently

1:11.2

as last week. BMW have just invested £600 million to make electric minis at the Cali plant

1:18.1

by Oxford. And they were doing it on the basis that these were hard and absolute targets

1:23.4

weren't going to move. And for a column I wrote this week, I was talking to an awful lot

1:27.4

of the industry. And they were actually praising Rishi-Soonak for these hard, clear targets,

1:32.2

which they said, put Britain ahead of the rest of Europe, and it gave us a very, very strong

1:37.4

position. And they all said, you know, billions of pounds of investment is pouring into the

1:41.9

EV system, into new charging networks and all the rest of it. And this is a really, really

1:47.8

great moment for Britain. And then at the last minute, he tears it all up and goes in totally

1:52.4

the opposite direction. He has infuriated open-toed sandal wearing lefties like the Ford

1:58.1

Motor Corporation. I think he was aiming this out of eco zealots and he's ended up hitting

...
