From KQED in San Francisco, I'm Alexis Madrigal. If you live in or even just visit San Francisco, you cannot miss the

driverless cars circling the city's neighborhoods. Cruise and Waymo both operate autonomous

vehicles, providing taxi services to people, you know, like Uber or Lyft. While they've been operating

for a while, now they're seeking permission from the state's Public Utilities Commission to expand

their operations in the city.

Some local officials argued the technology isn't ready.

They point to recent examples of automated cars stopped on roads or obstructing emergency

responders.

Other people say that the whole idea of self-driving cars is flawed.
