This week, I was joined by two very special guests β Sally deFries and DJ Bean. While Sally broke down her recent experience with Hailey Bieber's skincare line Rhode, DJ gave us all a look into his normal Sunday routine. | 0:00.0 | My name is Will DeFrees, and this is a Sunday Scaries Podcast, your cure for the Sunday Blues. |
| 0:07.0 | For my entire life, I haven't really enjoyed being told what to do. |
| 0:19.6 | And I think that's why I've avoided corporate life at all costs. |
| 0:23.2 | In fact, sometimes I laugh thinking about the fact that I've somewhat made a living out of just bad talking corporate life. |
| 0:29.4 | There's just something off-putting about someone else making the decisions for you, which I think is why I became obsessed with punk music and skateboarding in high school. |
| 0:37.4 | But much like the movie SLC punk alludes, sometimes selling out is inevitable. |
| 0:42.4 | I cringe thinking about the fact that my senior quote was, we can do a hell of a lot more damage in the system than outside of it. |
| 0:49.4 | But now, I go to an office from 9 to 5 every day. |
| 0:54.4 | In the past, I've had my incubator before. I've even had a free trial of LinkedIn premium when I was really down bad on the job front. |
| 1:02.4 | But all in all, I think I've done a decent job, really straddling the line between having a fun job and being attacked under the thumb of corporations. |
| 1:09.4 | For others, however, that life suits them better than it ever would have suited me, and that's fine. |
| 1:14.4 | All work is a transaction in a way, so why not do the transaction that yields the most money and gives you the most benefits, and of course time off as well? |
| 1:23.4 | But what happens when those transactions get a little bit blurry? When you stop caring as much and begin to put yourself before your company? |
| 1:30.4 | You know, like you probably should be doing in life. Well, our behaviors begin to change. |
| 1:34.4 | And these three recent workplace trends that you may have heard of may have done yourself or may have simply gotten some inspiration from? |
| 1:42.4 | Well, they're worth noting. Our first is called resentism. |
| 1:47.4 | They're calling it the natural successor to quiet quitting. It's the act of staying in an unsatisfying job due to a perceived lack of better options or fear of job insecurity. |
| 1:58.4 | Insider said of it, resentism involves keeping your job when you don't want to, namely when you're worried about job security or lack of alternatives, and layoffs have been sweeping the tech industry over the last few months, for instance, with companies like Google and Microsoft laying off tens of thousands of workers. |
| 2:14.4 | If your software engineer who hates your job, you might want to stay at your current workplace and decide to gruel through what they said. |
| 2:20.4 | I spent the first half of my 20s working one job and the second half working another. And truthfully, I never really felt like there were many options out there for me. |
| 2:29.4 | This stemmed from a few different things. Where I lived, my resume, and my lack of success in job hunting overall. It was pretty defeating. |
| 2:37.4 | So to say that I've inadvertently felt this concept of resentism, it would be accurate. But I also think anyone who's disliked their job and struggled to find a new one would actually fit this mold as well. |
