Feast Network. Since the end of the 18th century, perhaps the most noteworthy feature of Western

civilization which had been birthed, nurtured, and matured in Reformation has been its impulse to revolution.

According to Christopher Dawson, a host of great revolutions in the Western world transformed both the shape of the nations and the shape of their

regulent and ancient Christian cultures.

The contrast could not be more obvious or stark.

In his preface to Milton's Paradise Law, C.S. Lewis wrote, the first qualification for

judging anything, any piece of workmanship, say,

from a corkscrew to a cathedral, is to know what it is. It is to know what it was intended to do,

how it was intended to be used. After that has been discovered, the temperance reformer may decide

that the corkscrew was made for a bad purpose, and the

communist may think the same thing about the cathedral, but such questions come later.

The first thing to understand is if you are mistakenly thinking that the corkscrew is for opening cans or the cathedral for

entertaining tour groups, you can really say nothing intelligible about them. The first thing

you need to know about a thing is what that thing is meant to be. Thus, it is important that we clearly,

carefully, and cogently define both revolution and reformation.

Revolution is, by definition, the overthrow of the existing political, social, moral,
