On the morning of July 18, 2014, Florida State University Law Professor Dan Markell dropped off his two young sons at preschool and headed to the gym for his morning workout.

As Markell exited the gym and headed home, a light green Prius followed his car.

Dan was just finishing up a cell phone call as he pulled into his garage, telling the person on the other end of the line that he was being approached by someone he didn't recognize.

Dan's neighbor, Jim Geiger, heard shots ring out and went next door to investigate.

Geiger found Markell clinging onto life in the front seat of his car.

Geiger told 911 operators that he had seen a light-colored Prius fleeing the scene.

Using surveillance footage and rental records of the Prius,

law enforcement were able to identify two

Miami men as Markell's murderers, Luis Rivera and Siegfriedo Garcia. On October 4th, 2016,

Luis Rivera, the getaway driver, negotiated a plea deal where he agreed to cooperate with law

enforcement in exchange for a 19-year prison

sentence. Rivera, a gang member with the Latin Kings, told investigators that the middle

woman was Catherine Katie Magbenua, the shooter, Siegfriedo Garcia's baby mama. At the time

of Dan's murder, Magbenua was dating Dan Markell's ex-wife's

Wendy's brother, Charlie Adelson. Rivera claimed he had been told by Rivera that they had been

hired by Markell's ex-wife, Wendy Adelson. Adelson and her family had developed a passionate hatred for Dan

Markell and desperately wanted to move Wendy and her and Dan's two children to Miami. A judge

had denied this request. Rivera's confession echoed the interrogations of Jeffrey Lacasse,

Wendy Adelson's most recent ex-boyfriend.

Lacass told police that Wendy had made a joke that her brother had bought her a TV because it was,
