Summary

Texas Republicans just suffered a major legal defeat — and now they’re panicking. After their gerrymandered redistricting scheme collapsed in court, a dissenting judge went off the rails, name-dropping Marc Elias and pushing conspiracy-style attacks instead of legal arguments. In this video, Marc explains why the GOP lost, what made their map unconstitutional, and how these wild attacks on voting rights lawyers expose the weakness of their case. When extremists can’t win on the law, they go after the people defending democracy. I've been litigating voting in election cases for more than 30 years. And during that time,

0:04.5

I have been involved in some of the biggest ones. And I've also seen my fair share that have

0:09.0

frankly gone off the rails. But I've never seen one, like what we are watching take place in

0:13.8

Texas, where after Republicans redrew their congressional map, a lawsuit was filed, it won,

0:20.0

and boy, then the fireworks really started.

So sit back, grab something to drink, because this is going to be a ride.

But before we get into any of that, subscribe to this channel to stay informed about how you

can defend democracy. So all of this started, as you no doubt remember, when Donald Trump insisted that

0:39.6

Texas redraw its congressional map in the middle of the decade. It is called mid-cycle redistricting.

0:47.3

Donald Trump thought he was being smarter than everybody else by pressuring Texas after Texas.

0:52.9

He pressured Missouri and North Carolina. He has tried to

0:56.9

pressure Indiana so far without success. Florida is going to undoubtedly do his bidding. And he set up a

1:03.9

bit of a chain reaction, right? We saw California on the Democratic side. It redrew its map through the legislative, through the ballot initiative

1:12.5

process, rather.

1:14.0

We've seen Virginia start to take its steps forward to redraw its map.

1:19.9

And anyway, we've been watching this go back and forth, but the cornerstone of all of this,

1:24.4

like the place that it all starts and that everything else is kind of like an

1:28.5

addition to or chain reaction to is Texas. But I got to tell you, there isn't any chance that

1:33.6

Donald Trump had in mind the debacle that Republicans have created in the state of Texas as they

1:39.9

tried to gerrymander this map. The problem for Republicans began when the Department of Justice

1:46.7

sent a letter to the state of Texas saying, you need to redraw your maps. And you need to

1:54.1

redraw them because the maps that are in place that the state of Texas drew in 2021 used
