Summary

On January 20th, 2023, Larry Ray was sentenced to 60 years in prison for racketeering conspiracy, violent crime in aid of racketeering, extortion, sex trafficking, forced labor, tax evasion, and money laundering offenses. Daniel Barban Levin escaped the cult and used writing to process his mind control experience. He also wanted to do something to help his friends, who were still psychologically imprisoned. His memoir, Slonim Woods 9, published in 2021, was a revealing and poetic description of his time in a mind control cult. 0:32.6	that you hadn't read it, but then whoever did it
0:35.6	did great voices of all the different characters.
0:38.3	So I think, you know, anyone who likes listening to books, that it will be incredible.

0:49.3	And I have to, you know, tell my listeners who may not know my backstory, but I was a poetry major
0:56.4	at Queens College in 1974. And when I was sucked into the Mooneys as a sign of my obedience,
1:04.4	I threw out all of my poetry because I was ordered to. So, man, as I'm listening to your
1:10.2	poetic prose of your memoir, it's just getting my
1:14.8	neurons bouncing going, you miss that voice, that creative voice, because so much of what I've
1:22.5	been doing, Dan, has been nonfiction and heavy stuff like psychology and all that. I just want to say a few more
1:30.1	things you hold an MFA from the University of California, Irvine. You're a winner of all kinds
1:36.4	of prizes and fellowships and incredible accolades, and you deserve them. You're currently living in Los Angeles. I believe you'll be
1:48.4	teaching a course affiliated with Stanford University about turning your stories into
1:57.2	memoirs that can also help educate people
2:01.7	about cults and mind control.
2:04.3	And before we start, I'll just add one more thing
