Summary

Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel are joined by Ben Hedley, founder of The Little Car Company. Based at Bicester Heritage, The Little Car Company recreates iconic cars from the likes of Bugatti, Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari in miniature. Powered by electric motors and typically 75 per cent scale, these recreations have the blessings of the companies that produced the originals and in some cases can be driven on the road. Ben explains where the idea came from and how he's made his business profitable within three short years.

Hello everybody. Welcome back to the Intercooler Podcast with me Dan Prosser, Andrew Frankel, my co-host sitting opposite me.

0:12.0

This is episode 211 and we're joined by Ben Hedley.

0:17.0

Not a name that would be familiar to loads of our listeners, but I think your company, the little car company, will be by now, Ben.

0:26.4

Thank you ever so much for joining us.

0:28.7

Ben, I was wondering about how to describe the little car company, but I realized I don't have to because you're here.

0:34.1

So in a couple of sentences, what is it?

0:38.0

So we reinterpret some of the sort of greatest cars in the past so we make slightly scaled down

0:44.9

versions of cars like the Ferrari 250 Testerosa the Bugatti type 35 which is

0:51.8

our baby too and Aston Martin DB 5. The name actually is probably a bit

0:57.4

confusing because people sort of say you make toys and it's a bit yeah we're looking at that at the moment because we don't look at the toys. We look at them as slightly scaled down classics from the past.

1:09.0

Yeah, interesting. And Andrew, do you know, I've never driven one which we clearly

1:13.6

fairly soon you've driven many you drove one this week I drove one yeah well

1:18.3

yes as you listen to this when it comes out last week yes Yes. So that is your new baby blower Bentley. I think you call it the

1:26.8

blower junior, don't you? That's what? Which isn't that junior at all. It's 85% the

1:32.2

size of the real thing. and the real thing ain't small

1:35.5

so this is a car and it's interesting to hear what you say about the name

1:40.8

because this is a car calling it from the little car company which is actually

1:44.8

quite a lot bigger than quite a few I mean I was looking at the dimensions and sort of

1:49.9

in the sort of pre-war era it's about halfway between a pre-war era. It's about halfway between a pre-war

1:54.9

M. G. and a pre-war Aston Martin in terms of its size.

1:58.4

So it's not a small car.
