A new year means we're busy at work on our four-part special series for Black History Month.

And as we prepare for next month, we're bringing back a few episodes from Reconstructed,

our series from last February, all about the adoring legacy of Reconstruction.

The first episode, birth of a Black Nation,

focuses on the rise of Black political power during the age of Reconstruction,

and how the gains and losses of that time shape our current political landscape.

Just these past midterms, there were a record number of Black candidates running for office,

with some notable victories.

In Maryland, Westmore became the third Black person ever elected governor in the US.

Karen Bass was the first woman elected mayor of Los Angeles,

and Raphael Warnock held on to his Senate seat in Georgia.
