Over the past couple of years, I’ve documented many challenges my dog This! and I have overcome, like reactivity, fear, resource guarding, and car sickness, to name a few behavior issues. And then, at an agility seminar here at my facility, This! fell apart. Now it’s time to put everything together. I have a two-part series outlining a timeline of This!’s struggles and what I’ve discovered to help her and any other dogs.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How This! falling apart at an agility seminar was a symptom of a larger problem.
• Why you can’t dog train something that isn’t a dog training problem.
• The origins of This!’s name and that there are no coincidences.
• What I began noticing about This!’s body mechanics early in puppyhood.
• That This! only showed true drive for activities of adrenaline like chasing.
• About the reactivity, resource guarding, car sickness, stunted growth, and joylessness experienced by This!.
• How anything involving thinking for This! led to her decompressing for hours.
• Why my only focus for This! became her joy.
• How a naturopath came into my life to help me help This!.
• About This!’s growth stall relative to her littermates.
• What agility jump grids help us notice in our agility dogs.
• This!’s immediate performance improvement after nutritional changes.

0:00.0 | Over the last several months, I have hinted to the fact that I was going to share a deep dive |
0:05.8 | into some of the history of my now two and a half year old dog this, some of the things that |
0:12.6 | we've gone through together and some of the great observations that I've made that I believe |
0:18.4 | are going to help many, many people. So this is probably going |
0:22.5 | to be a two-part episode, but I can't wait to share all that I've learned. So let's jump |
0:28.1 | right into it. Imagine this. Imagine you have a 19-month-old performance-bred border collie, one that comes from a long line of world championship, world team dogs, four generations of dogs from different countries that have been |
0:56.7 | on world teams that have won medals at the world championships. And this 19-month-old puppy is going |
1:04.5 | to go to her first ever seminar with somebody you really respect. And the best of all is the |
1:10.2 | seminar is at your own facility, like it's an environment that your puppy is really respect. And the best of all is the seminar is at your own facility, |
1:11.6 | like it's an environment that your puppy is comfortable in. And to add to the excitement, |
1:16.8 | two of her littermates are also going to be at the exact same seminar. Now, you recognize that |
1:21.7 | one of the littermates is far, far more advanced and you're okay with that. You are excited |
1:26.5 | to show off your skills. |
1:28.4 | Just think about how you would feel knowing that you've got this long line of successful dogs. |
1:36.7 | And this is the third generation that you've owned of the four generations of World Team |
1:41.9 | Dogs. And the seminar begins. It's a nice small seminar, |
1:45.7 | so that's another advantage to these dogs. But at 19 months old, every dog I've ever owned |
1:51.5 | was trialing in agility by the time they were 19 months old for better or for worse. |
1:56.6 | I don't know that any dog in my future will ever be because of the complexity of the sport |
2:01.5 | and the complexity of the skills. But every other dog I'd ever owned had been in the ring |
2:06.8 | and succeeding by the time they were 19 months old. And this is grandmother was actually named |
2:12.6 | to her first world team before the age of three. And so the seminar begins and I get out there and this falls apart. |
