Summary

When met with an unexpected situation, do you react or respond? And what is the difference? According to Dr. Matt James, while some people use the words interchangeably, there is a world of difference in their meanings. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/focus-forgiveness/201609/react-vs-respond Tony shares a story of showing up late to a recent speaking opportunity where he learned whether or not he was more prone to reaction or response. Tony shares the results of taking the Implicit Association Test (IAT) https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/ and discusses how understanding how we give meaning to certain people and situations contributes to how we react or how we respond. And Tony also references Marshal Rosenberg’s book “Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life: Life-Changing Tools for Healthy Relationships (Nonviolent Communication Guides)” https://amzn.to/3EjVZkx If you are interested in being coached in Tony's upcoming "Magnetic Marriage Podcast," please email him for more information. Over the past weekend, I was in Arizona and I was going to speak to a large group of single

0:06.8

adults from ages 30 and above. And let me just tell you that I've done a lot of speaking in my day

0:13.0

and on these types of events, I just make an assumption that the event starts at 7 p.m. So I

0:20.2

truly assumed that the presentation was at 7. Now, why?

0:23.2

Well, just because, and thankfully the organizer of the event texted me at 445 and said,

0:29.6

Hey, I'll see you soon. Now, let me read you the text that followed. So 446, I respond back,

0:36.4

absolutely. 7 p.m. I'm assuming, hoping, guessing,

0:40.8

ha, ha, I realized that as I scrolled through our text that I have not seen a time. So I really

0:46.3

hope that that's the case. I'm a little over an hour from Casa Grande, where the presentation

0:52.1

was going to be held. At 4.1, so five minutes later, I text

0:57.8

back after not hearing anything. And if you don't mind just confirming that it is at 7 p.m., that

1:03.2

would be great. Then seven minutes later, at 458 p.m., I say, so we're planning on leaving here at 5.30,

1:10.2

so I should be there around 6.40. And then at 5 p.m., I say, so we're planning on leaving here at 5.30, so I should be there around 6.40.

1:13.4

And then at 5 p.m., the organizer gets back to me and says, no, you're on at 6 p.m.

1:20.9

So we're an hour away, and we're hanging out with my daughter and son-in-law. We're in sweats.

1:26.4

And as I mentioned, we're an hour away. It's

1:28.6

five o'clock. The presentation starts at six. I flew to Arizona to do this presentation,

1:34.2

and a lot of people are coming. Now, here is where I feel like years of mindfulness and

1:40.3

meditation and building in that pause just kicked into high gear. So I said, hey, we need to get

1:47.5

dressed and we need to be ready. And my wife and my daughter and my son-in-law were amazing and said,

1:53.0

all right, we can do this. We can be out of here in five, maybe 10 minutes max. And everybody

1:56.9

jumped up, got into high gear. And here's the next text that I send.
