Summary

In this episode, we react to the Big Ten’s announcement that football would be returning the weekend of October 24. We look at the Big Ten’s decision, and what it means for Michigan.

We begin by debating the legitimacy or value of a shortened delayed season. We outline why the Big Ten should still be considered in full for the College Football Playoff, why fans should still be excited about the season and the season should be viewed as asterisk-free.

We then take a peek at the potential for Michigan to suffer additional opt-outs, and the feasibility of Jalen Mayfield and Ambry Thomas to return. We outline why it ultimately likely won't be an area of great news for Wolverine fans, discuss Nico Collins' decision and look at other areas on the depth chart.

Our third topic goes bigger-picture, and looks at the feasibility of an eight-game season. We discuss why daily antigen testing gives us more confidence that a season can occur, why college football's postponed games so far aren't relevant to the equation and how likely it is that Michigan and other towns remain in the "green" zone.

Finally, we break down whether — past decisions in the past — a delayed start helps or hurts Michigan's chances at capturing a Big Ten title. We look at two position groups where it helps a great deal, and discuss what can be gleaned from the Wolverines' practice approach over the last month.

Michigan football, basketball, and recruiting. I'm your host, Zach Shaw. Steve Lorenz here with me.

Lots to talk about. I'm sure by now everyone has heard the news, but the Big Ten is officially

0:16.6

returning to football this fall. The season, as being announced, some of these details are still

0:23.9

trickling out, but we're seeing eight game schedule. And then there's a proposed, I don't think

0:30.8

this is officially confirmed, but a ninth crossover or plus one game. So there obviously

0:37.2

will be the Big Ten championship,

0:38.6

but the runner-up in each division will face each other,

0:41.5

the third best team in each division will face each other.

0:43.8

So every Big Ten team is going to get nine games this season.

0:48.3

It will run from October 24th to December 12th.

0:53.2

So not a lot of leeway in terms of by weeks or if they have to postpone

0:57.9

anything, but the Big Ten released its testing protocols. Lots to digest. So what we'll do for this

1:06.2

podcast is we'll do five kind of reactionary questions. The first things that come to our mind and our initial thoughts,

1:13.5

most of them will be Michigan related.

1:15.1

There might be a little bit of Big Ten stuff overall.

1:17.6

But Steve, we can jump into the first question,

1:20.5

and that is, is this, well, I guess we have overall thoughts,

1:26.3

but in terms of it's a short shortened season

1:29.9

eight game regular season with one now plus one game and then and then the bowl game

1:37.5

is this a satisfactory resolution so I know when know when this initially happened,

1:44.3

the postponement really happened,

...
