Summary

"The state police used a helicopter to search for two hours along the banks of the Susquehanna River, near where his car was found, for any signs.... Investigators also used a bloodhound to try to pick up his scent, to no avail."

On 15 April 2005, Ray Gricar called into his office and took a half-day off of work. The 59-year-old Ohio native worked as the District Attorney for Pennsylvania's Centre County, and despite having plenty to do that Friday, nobody thought twice about the esteemed prosecutor taking time off of work, as he had been complaining of fatigue for weeks.

That evening, Ray would fail to contact his girlfriend, Patty Fornicola, who he lived and worked with. She called 911 at approximately 11:30 PM, resulting in a desperate search for any sign of Ray or his vehicle...

When a person disappears, it's a shocking event. It immediately captures our attention

0:14.9

because it's so hard to imagine how an otherwise normal person can vanish and become a missing

0:20.3

person. We immediately seek out answers to questions that can shed some light. Was there

0:26.6

a history of depression? When and where was the victim last seen? Was a vehicle found? And if so,

0:33.4

in what condition? Did the missing person have any obvious enemies? The answers to questions

0:39.7

like these can many times provide an obvious direction for investigators to focus their attention,

0:44.5

but sometimes they don't. Sometimes the answer is ambiguous and rather than clearing the waters,

0:51.0

others adds mystery of its own. Was there a history of depression? Well, kinda depending on who

0:57.6

you ask. Did the missing person have any enemies? Yes, several. Some of the answers would support a

1:04.5

suicide theory. Others seem to indicate a possible murder. We attempt to trace the last known

1:11.0

movements of the missing person and discover that it's harder than it seems. In all but the smallest

1:16.8

towns, it is possible for a person to get lost if getting lost is on the agenda. Think about a

1:22.6

recent day of your own when you had 10 things to do and errands to run. Did you tell someone each

1:28.3

stop you intended to make? Did you drive your normal route? Did you perhaps go to a different

1:34.6

store than the one you would normally visit? If a person were to disappear before they got home

1:39.5

from the store, the answer to each of those questions would have a dramatic impact on how likely

1:44.3

it is they could be found. That is of course, assuming the missing person is dead. What if the missing

1:51.0

person is not dead but disappeared voluntarily? You would expect to find the missing person's vehicle

1:58.0

but in what condition? It burned out Hulk left in the woods or abandoned near a bridge. What about

2:05.0

their bank accounts? Their phone. The riddles multiply exponentially, like a virus that threatens to

2:12.3

kill the investigation by overwhelming it with questions. And investigators have no choice but

2:17.8

to fight back with an answer for each one. The scope of the investigation grows and more detectives
