Summary
We’re taking a break from talk of quarantine and self-isolation, as we’re joined on today’s Ramble Meets… by TV and radio broadcaster Mark Pougatch!
Mark has been at the forefront of sports broadcasting since Radio 5 live’s formative years, and has gone on to become one of the most experienced and well respected football broadcasters in the country. Mark sits down with Luke to discuss how he got into the industry, what he looks for in pundits he works with and the under-appreciated differences between radio and TV. He also gives us an insight into what was one of the most nerve-wracking days of his career: presenting ITV’s coverage of England’s semi-final against Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

| 0:00.0 | Today on RumbleMix I'm joined by Mark Pugatch. A broadcast of 30 is standing, he has covered |
| 0:11.6 | everything in football from the World Cup to the Premier League and from the FA Cup |
| 0:15.6 | to the Africa Cup of Nations and all that falls in between. He is currently found on the |
| 0:20.1 | sofa as part of BT Sports score team alongside our very own Jules Breach and anchoring England |
| 0:25.7 | Games for ITV and there's a masterful broadcaster across that medium and radio as well, a reassuring |
| 0:31.1 | and authoritative voice, yet a relatable and friendly one. Of his own career he says, |
| 0:35.7 | I've broadcasted from Auckland to Aquington and from Blythe to Brisbane in every single time. |
| 0:40.7 | It's been a pleasure. Mark, welcome to RumbleMix. Thank you very much, Luke, lovely to be here. |
| 0:45.3 | Thank you very much for coming in. I wonder, Mark, what makes in your opinion a good broadcaster? |
| 0:51.6 | What makes a good broadcaster in my opinion is authority. Now that only comes with a bit of experience, |
| 0:59.6 | knowledge, that doesn't come with experience necessarily. You can have that from the word go, |
| 1:04.4 | a friendly tone and an ability to talk one on one. I was taught very early on, it's important to |
| 1:11.4 | think that you're talking to one person. And so I have a very good mate called Gavin who's a |
| 1:15.2 | massive Liverpool fan. You can imagine what he's like just at the moment here and so to be able to |
| 1:19.0 | talk to him one on one. And also really important, and I say that I'm sure you do as well, |
| 1:23.6 | Luke, speak to a lot of students who want to get into this game to listen. It's amazing how |
| 1:29.6 | many people don't listen. People have a lot of experience, not just in sport, obviously, |
| 1:33.5 | across broadcasting, who don't listen. They're so fixated on what they're going to ask next that |
| 1:37.4 | they forget to listen. And I think something else which is really important and this is innate |
| 1:42.6 | nosy. I'm incredibly nose. I'm curious, haven't you? |
| 1:46.4 | Really curious. I'm actually quite cross with myself. I know some about your wife now, but I don't |
| 1:50.9 | know where you live. And that really annoys me because it's normally about my third question, |
