Not many would have heard of Rajkumari Gupta, a woman revolutionary born in 1902.

She was born in Kanpur to a family of grocers and married at the tender age of 13, inspired

by Mahatma Gandhi, the young couple joined the independence movement.

At that time, Mahatma had started the non-cooperation movement, which was one of his organized

acts of civil disobedience.

However, it came to a premature end in 1922.

After this, Rajkumari became convinced that only an armed struggle could win Indians

their independence.

And she became associated with revolutionaries like Chandrashekar Azad and secretly passed

on messages and materials to them.

All this was without her husband or her family's knowledge.

She used to say,

We were Gandhians on the surface beneath the surface, we were revolutionaries.

She was tasked with supplying revolvers for famous Kakuri train raid.

This was a train that was carrying money bags or taxes from Indians to be deposited

in British Treasury.

The revolutionaries successfully raided it and escaped with the money to finance the independence

movement.

Rajkumari did all her revolutionary work without the knowledge of her husband or in-laws.

She hid firearms in her undergarments, wore kadi clothes and set off walking across the

fields along with her three-year-old son.

It was then that she was caught and arrested.
