broadcasting behind enemy lines tonight's episode three dimensional-Dimensional Chess.

Back when I was in eighth grade in Kent Junior High School,

I was a member of the Chess Club.

It was the only year that I was a member of a Chess Club

and we had a lot of fun going from school to school and competing in chess tournaments.

Now I was never really very good at the game but I did have a lot of fun playing against the other members.

I knew some very basic moves, I knew some very basic strategies. One of which, as I recall, was to try and take control of the center of the board. And I remember getting a book about how to play chess.

It was a big book, and in it were, many, many diagrams about a number of different gambit's, a number of different strategies to use in playing chess.

That was beyond my ability. And I remember looking at that book and maybe reading the first

chapter, but I never got into the subsequent chapters. It all just seemed hopelessly complicated

to me and something that I would never be able to master.

And frankly, I never went beyond that very basic level.

But in the TV show Star Trek, Mr. Spock was not just a master of chess. In that show there was something called three-dimensional chess.

And they had the regular chess board, and then they would have other little bits and pieces of chessboard above it.

And the chess pieces could move on the regular board or they could move up above it and

somehow this was supposed to be three-dimensional chess.

The idea being I think that chess is complicated enough but three three-dimensional chess is going to be super complicated.

This is something that only a Vulcan can do.

But back during this time period of the early 70s when I was in eighthth grade, Star Trek was gaining popularity after it had been

canceled after three seasons in 1969. And I remember you could actually buy a 3D chess set and take it home and put it together and you could play 3D

chess too, just like Mr. Spock. Well my brother Cam got one of these chess sets and I honestly can't even remember if he put it together or not I can't remember if he played chess on it or not I know I didn't play chess on it that was way too complicated
