Hello and welcome to Quick Fix, how to's bonus episode for Slate Plus members. In this week's

conversation, i talked about

hypnosis with the stanford university psychiatrist dr david spiegel and dr spiegel led me through an

exercise in self hypnosis during the episode and two days later the how to team got on a call

because well obviously everyone was pretty eager to find

out how it went. But they didn't just want to hear about what had already happened. They wanted

to know about how I felt about it and if I had noticed any changes since the session. So I sat down

for a debrief with producers Joel Meyer and Sophie Summergrad and with my co-host Courtney Martin.

All right. I am so excited to hear about this Carvel. So going into this, what were your

expectations? Like was hypnosis something you thought was interesting previously? Had you

ever tried this before? Yeah. I mean, I'm like sort of like hypnosis curious, I guess, do you call it? I mean, I was like, I'm down. I did undergo hypnosis once before and I didn't think it worked. But I just think that maybe that person wasn't very good at it. What were those circumstances when you did it before? Like late night at a party or like a real situation? No, no, no, I went to someone.

I went to a friend who was like, oh, I was like, I have this problem. My friend was like,

oh, my friend's a hypnotist. They can hook you up. I was like, great, let's give you a shot. Wow. Okay. But I didn't think it worked. And then I actually tried another time when I was like, I tried it in an academic context.

I was taking a standardized test,

and I was really struggling with one section,

and my tutor was like,

oh, my brother's a hypnotist.
