Summary

Three hundred and forty one day days had passed since Andy Murray last took to a competitive match court, and few people would have expected him to play as well as he did at the Fever-Tree Championships on Tuesday. The five-time champion fought, scrapped and dragged himself to within each of the finish-line, but Kyrgios found a way through in the end.

Afterwards, Catherine Whitaker and Gigi Salmon convened next to a covered Centre Court to assess how Murray looked, and whether Kyrgios should be doing more at this stage of his career.

They also looked at the contrasting fortunes of Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans, spoke to Feliciano Lopez, and played the cocktail sticks game with Stan Wawrinka. ‘What would surprise you about Stan Wawrinka?’ was one of the questions. His answer was surprising.

The Fever-Tree Championships at The Queen’s Club is broadcast on Amazon Prime Video in the UK from 11.30am every day. Their coverage is presented by our very own Catherine Whitaker, alongside Ross Dyer, Daniela Hantuchova and Greg Rusedski.

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments and The Fever-Tree Championships, in association with Telegraph Sport. It is presented by Catherine Whitaker (Prime Video) and David Law (BBC 5 Live, BT Sport).

The Fever Tree Championships actually, Gigi Samman alongside me as we sit courtside, the bubble is being inflated which just what four or five hours ago was being played on by Andy Murray in Nick Kirill,

0:43.0

Murray's first professional match in 11 months, 341 days is it? Not that we've all been counting and he played remarkably well.

0:54.0

It was a remarkably competitive match but he lost it in the end to Nick Kirill, seven games to five in the third set.

1:01.0

We shouldn't dwell on this, it's only a footnote really but it was a double fault that eventually crossed him the match point.

1:09.0

It's a wide ranging question Gigi but what do your takeaways from that match?

1:14.0

I think they can only be positive as can't they, for Andy Murray? I'm sure the competitor in him, good evening and hello by the way.

1:20.0

We've only just really seen each other because you've been with Amazon all day and I've been scurrying around here picking out the bits and pieces.

1:26.0

The competitor in Murray will be disappointed that he could have possibly got it done in two and he had that advantage in two at the first set.

1:33.0

But I think when you think of his pre-match interview saying I haven't set any goals or no expectations, it can only be positive.

1:40.0

He put his body through three sets, he's going to feel it tomorrow but it's good pain that he's going to be feeling because he's back out on the court.

1:47.0

We saw a fist pumping, we saw the fighter Andy Murray out there. It was a good test against someone like Nick Kirill.

1:53.0

I think there can only be positives for Andy Murray to take away. Of course, he's a winner, he wants to win every match but this was his first match back as you said.

2:01.0

So I think it's been a really positive day for Andy Murray.

2:04.0

We'll talk plenty about Nick Kirill as well but it should probably be pointed out that Nick Kirill was as keen to talk about Andy Murray and his comeback as we are.

2:11.0

And here is a little flavour of what Nick Kirill has had to say about Andy Murray and what he made of his performance after the match.

2:17.0

On big points when I won them, I felt bad if I showed any emotion. I didn't really want to get into his grill at all.

2:25.0

Other guys, if I'm up 30 or when I win that point, I have a match point, I'm probably going to be sucked up.

2:31.0

The whole time I was just like, it was kind of good to just see him back out there but at the same time it was a very awkward match for me because I was thinking the guy had played a match in a year and I was getting smoked in the first eight.

2:42.0

This is not going to be a good look if I lose this match.
