Summary

Today we will be discussing the life and legacy of Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawaii. Born on September 2, 1838, Lili'uokalani was the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. She was the first queen to write her own music and composed the most famous Hawaiian song, Aloha Oe. After her brother, King Kalakaua, passed away in 1891, Lili'uokalani assumed the throne and sought to restore power to the Hawaiian monarchy. She was successful in introducing a new constitution, but her efforts were thwarted by the U.S. government which sought to overthrow her and annex Hawaii as a Territory. Queen Lili’uokalani was then deposed and arrested in 1895. She was pardoned in 1896 and spent the rest of her life advocating for Hawaiian independence. Queen Lili'uokalani was a powerful symbol of Hawaiian sovereignty, and her legacy still lives on in the music, culture and politics of Hawaii today. Thank you for tuning in, and we hope you’ve enjoyed learning about Queen Lili'uokalani. ----------------------------------- You can find the full show notes here: queenshistorypodcast.com/queen-liliuokalani-of-hawaii Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network.
