Summary

Q&A

What are the advantages of a 6” deep raised bed?

You may wonder how your garden could benefit from a raised bed that is only 6” deep when the roots may go deeper. I’m careful about where my shallow beds are and what I grow in them.

For today's Friday Q&A, we're going to be talking about a question regarding raised beds.

0:07.1

This question came from Timothy a couple of months ago, and I replied to him, but I thought,

0:11.2

you know what, his question is probably one that a lot of people are asking.

0:15.5

And his question is this.

0:17.5

What are the advantages of having a raised bed garden that is only six inches tall?

0:24.0

And I think that's a really good question and this is what I told him.

0:28.6

If a raised bed is on top of a plot of land, like you're not putting it on concrete or anything

0:35.9

impervious, you're actually putting it in your

0:38.3

garden. Those roots that are in there are going to have access to that deeper soil. But the advantage of

0:46.1

just having six inches in a raised bed is that you can better control the top soil in that raised bed.

0:53.2

And most of the feeder roots of plants are actually in the

0:57.1

top soil now they will go deep like I said but a lot of them are right up there in the top soil and

1:03.0

that will allow you to be able to add fertility and nutrition and to better be able to feed that plant

1:10.3

also another thing is that that anytime you do a raised

1:14.7

bed of any sort, whether that's one with walls like a typical raised bed garden, or if you just do

1:21.1

something called raised rows, where you have raised rows in your ground bed that you never walk on. You have specific paths in between,

1:30.3

but the rows actually function like a raised bed because you never walk on them. Anytime you have

1:36.5

any kind of a raised bed that you don't walk on, you are limiting compaction. And so that way,

1:43.9

there's airflow,

1:45.4

there's more exchange between the air and nutrients

1:49.3

and the water in your garden bed.

1:51.3

And so that's a benefit there
