Extremely single. Is that the highest level of single you can be? I guess. Dear Shandy,

I'm 29 and live in the south so I guess culturally speaking I get treated more like New Yorkers in their late 30s.

I don't have a lot of peers who are single and I'm usually the third or 11th wheel.

It has never been a problem in the last few years as I love my couple of friends dearly and don't mind being the single one.

But they're starting to have kids now and those friendships are obviously changing.

Ultimately, I also want kids but I've always felt like I'd be content to do it alone if I hadn't found the right person

when the time in my life came where I was ready for them. Dating wise, I had a few long term relationships in a row starting as a teenager and lasting to 24.

I've been single the past five years other than one six month long stint a couple of years ago where I did fall in love with someone who ended up being jealous and controlling and that ended very painfully.

I'm a flirtatious person. I've been told. I'd probably just call myself affectionate but whatever.

And have struggled with jealous partners a bit because of it. But I dated a lot in my mid 20s and eventually just realized I like myself.

flirtatiousness at all and stopped trying to change for people I date. Now I finished my PhD and I'm making good money and am content on my own for the most part.

This year when I've lost people or moved states, I've definitely missed having a partner to share the burden.
