Summary

I spent months researching the topic of women in ministry so that I could present you with this exhaustive analysis of everything the Bible says about it. Was Mary Magdalene "an apostle to the apostles" as NT Wright claims? Was Junia an apostle, as a consensus of NT scholars believe? If so, what kind of apostle was she and does that mean that women can be elders, too? The basic view of the egalitarians (who see no role differences for men and women regarding leadership in the church) is that women were in the highest possible realm of leadership in the NT since some of them were apostles. They conclude that this means women can be in any leadership role, including pastor or elder. The basic view of the complementarians (who say that the role of elder is preserved for men) is that women were either not apostles at all or that they only were in the sense of being missionaries. Some say this means that in a period of church planting a woman can have a transitory role of authority and teaching over men but that the permanent role of elder is reserved for men. Others say that even though they were missionaries it is reasonable to think that they had different roles than male missionaries in their work. As always, we will be going deep. Here are my notes from this study. If you’re looking to check my references, here’s where you will find them:https://biblethinker.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/5-Women-apostles-2.docx CLICK HERE for Burer and Wallace's paper from 2001 on why Junia is not an apostle. Richard Bauckham's response is on pages 192-200 (Kindle edition) of Gospel Women: Studies of Named Women in the Gospels. CLICK HERE for Burer's response to critics. He gives a ton more evidence for his position that Junia was well known to the apostles but not one of them. I really hope more scholars will interact with this paper. All right, this is it. This is the Women in Ministry series Part 5. Welcome back to me and

0:11.1

you to this series. It's been like a few weeks since we've done one and we're going to be

0:15.6

trying to kick them out as quick as I'm able to, depending on my schedule and my other

0:18.6

commitments and all this other stuff. I just want to produce stuff that's going to be thoughtful

0:22.4

and thorough because in this video, we're focusing on the idea that women were apostles

0:28.2

and basically the view is, hey, if women were apostles, why couldn't they also be elders?

0:34.4

In the highest roles of leadership in the church, the issue though, the reason why I want to,

0:40.9

why I'm doing this massive series, I'll remind you is a few things, things that I believe

0:44.8

about this, right? One, the issue of women in ministry has become a massive and vitriolic debate

0:50.3

within the body of Christ and in the world about the body of Christ. There's people on both sides,

0:56.8

but I encourage you to hesitate as well to just gut reaction to seeing the irritation and the

1:05.8

divisiveness that people have on the topic. I just want to say don't let your gut reaction be

1:11.6

to simply get on the fence on every issue people are upset about. This is going to make you

1:17.0

a weak Christian, unable to stand up and hold to biblical values in the midst of a shifting culture.

1:24.8

So it's not enough to get on the fence. So here's the basic idea we're doing today, right? The

1:29.4

egalitarians have two views. That's the people who think there's no restrictions on leadership roles

1:34.4

as far as what rank of leadership role there are for women. The egalitarians have two views on this.

1:40.0

They say there were women who were apostles and apostles have the highest teaching and authority

1:45.4

roles in the church. So if women were that highest role, they can't be forbidden teaching and

1:50.8

authority in other ways. And so it's going to force you and this is this is how it affects the

1:54.4

egalitarians. I've seen the egalitarians move through this process. They they go well, you know,

1:58.4

if there were women apostles, then that's another reason for me to rethink my view of 1 Timothy 2,
