Regular listeners will know me as the author of such episodes as The Worm That Naws and this

year's Halloween episode Goblins. But for those who don't, I'm a writer,

editor, amateur film scholar, and monster expert, as well as the author of three collections of

strange stories, most recently, Gienjol and other sardonic tales, which you can get from word-hored.

As a writer who works primarily in the cobwebbed corner usually referred to as weird fiction,

my work gets inevitably inexorably tied up with that of H.P. Lovecraft.

Over the years, my stories have appeared in more than a dozen publications with the word

Lovecraft or Cuthulou in the titles. Like many people, Lovecraft was one of my gateways to this wide weird world.

But when asked about my influences, I usually say that there are three old dead white guy

writers who give us a much clearer picture of what I'm trying to do with my own fiction.

E. F. Benson, William Hop Hodgson, and Manley Wade Wellman.

Wellman was a late contemporary of Lovecraft, his stories gracing a variety of pulp magazines ranging from astounding stories to startling stories to strange stories and of course to the legendary weird tales.

Perhaps best known for his tales of drawing and elaborating on the folklore of the

Appalachian Mountains.

The two stories that we've got for you this week are a little different from those,
