0:59.2 | Alright, well this is part four of a four part series we've been doing through the book of Psalms |
1:05.2 | learning how to adopt the language of these ancient poems and prayers as teaching us how to pray. |
1:14.2 | And we've been exploring different Psalms that express very different emotional postures towards God. |
1:22.2 | Pain, fear, confession and in this teaching we're going to explore Psalm 73 which is a prayer where the poet is expressing |
1:32.2 | a crisis of doubt, a crisis of faith. |
1:35.2 | When he looks at the world he doesn't see a world that his faith can always make sense of. |
1:43.2 | In fact, just the opposite, it seems like many of the things this poet believes about God are contradicted by what he sees going on around him. |
1:52.2 | And so for me the most profound learning here was that this poet doesn't work through his doubt by suppressing it. |
2:00.2 | Rather he gives full voice to his doubt before God. |
2:05.2 | And the irony, the beauty of this poem is that somehow this poet's words of doubt that are addressed to God now in the book of Psalms become God's word for us who are people who also doubt. |
2:19.2 | It's very profound. I've had a really important and ongoing wrestling match with doubts about God's existence. |
