Matt, welcome to Knowing Faith. Thanks so much for having me. I'm glad to have you, man. Honestly, Matt, you're one of those guys. I have to confess, you're one of those guys who frustrates me. Do you know why? I would love to hear why. Have I wronged you in some way? No, no, you haven't. I'm just joking with you.

0:38.2

No, but there are, I feel like there are guys who can preach, and there are guys who can sing,

0:43.6

and God has given you both gifts, and I feel like there's this kind of a mutual partnership

0:50.9

that teaching pastors have with worship pastors, but none of us try to pretend

0:54.8

that we can do both. And yet you, brother, can do both. And I just got to say, Lord, you're given

1:00.4

too many gifts to some of these guys out here like Matt. Well, from early on when we planted,

1:05.0

I promised our church I would not ever both lead music and preach on the same Sunday.

1:09.6

And have you kept that promise? Almost. There was one Sunday in these over seven years now that I had to lead a couple of songs

1:16.7

and preach. But I do, I'm grateful to get to serve the Lord. And I love him and I love his people.

1:24.6

And however I can be helpful in that work, I want to do so. I love it. I love it. I, you know, I have to think that if I ever got up on Sunday with a guitar and a mic, I think that the elders would restrain me. I think they'd hold me back. I think they'd say, brother, that is just not how the Lord has blessed you. And for the good of the body, we're going to prevent you from leading out in this way. It would come from a pure heart, but I don't know that it would become from a powerful expression of a gift. Well, do you sing? Well, I mean, I think everybody sings. Good. Question is like, to what degree, what quality level level would you feel comfortable singing in front of

2:02.0

your church family with a microphone you know if the spirit moved in that way it led me to a place

2:07.7

where to not do so would be disobedience i would do it but only only that my wife has a beautiful

2:13.6

i will say even yesterday at the end of the service, we had Lord's Supper, and then we

2:17.6

sang when I survey almost a cappella. And David, our music director, came up, so he's standing at his microphone, but I didn't leave the pulpit. I'm still standing there as well. And so he starts leading, but I'm singing, but my mic's not on. So there was a little bit of confusion, like, from his part and from mine, what is happening?

2:34.5

I wanted him to lead the song. But honestly, the volume of our people singing in the room,

2:40.3

it doesn't matter as much who's the one on the microphone lately. And I'm so grateful for that.

2:45.6

It's like just the church growing in their practice of singing. I was talking with a group of pastors and worship leaders this

2:52.2

weekend. And one of the questions I asked them is, if you were to think about the sound of your

2:58.5

church when you sing together, what sounds come to mind? Is it a wall of music or is it the voices of people that you know and love? And I'm grateful to be a part of a church where that is the sound of our church. Tell, let's just, and listen, if you're a listener and you're like, what is this episode? This episode, I'm talking with Matt Boswell, and I'm talking with him at Midwestern Seminaries for the Church National Conference. We're both here participating in that conference in a variety of ways.

But Matt, how do you introduce yourself?
