Prostititis refers to inflammation of the prostate gland. It can be classified as acute bacterial

prostititis where there's an acute infection of the prostate presenting with a more rapid onset of

symptoms or chronic

prostititis, where the symptoms last for at least three months.

Chronic prostititis may be further subdivided into chronic prostateitis or chronic pelvic

pain syndrome where there's no infection,

or chronic bacterial prostititis where there is an infection.

The cause of inflammation and pain in chronic prostititis is unclear.

It may initially be triggered by an infection with inflammation persisting after the infection has resolved.

Let's talk about the presentation.

Chronic prostititis presents with at least three months of symptoms.

These symptoms can include pelvic pain, which may affect the perineum, testicles,

scrotum, penis, rectum, groin, lower back or the superpubic area.

So it can be quite generalized pain.

Lower urinary tract symptoms such as dysuria, which is burning or stinging on passing urine,

hesitancy of urine, frequency and retention.

Sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction,

pain on ejaculation, and hematospirmia, which is blood in the semen, pain with bowel movements,

and a tender and enlarged prostate on examination, although examination may be normal.
