What's up, Roto Viz?

0:27.5

Welcome back to the RotoViz Fantasy Football Podcast.

0:31.9

I am Dave Kaban, one of the owners at RotoViz.

0:37.5

I will be coming to you for a solo episode this evening.

0:46.9

And what I want to talk about tonight as I record here is why it's so hard to project quarterbacks at the next level and why it is such a difficult endeavor to build a model that is going to be able to project

0:58.4

quarterbacks, it's hard to even find something that you can point to as useful before you

1:06.0

even get into some of the considerations about have you built a model that actually works from a

1:11.9

statistical standpoint, does it export to other data, some of that technical stuff that

1:19.6

you would start looking into when you're building models through more traditional kind

1:25.8

of academic approach versus what you might hear some people talk

1:28.9

about when they're looking for relationships, finding different ways to filter players,

1:33.3

what have you.

1:35.1

But what I wanted to do was come up with something like a very simple multiple linear regression model, something along those lines.

1:48.3

It helps give some context to the type of things that you might look for in a young

1:56.3

passer.

1:57.7

And this is a modeling approach where you are essentially blending a couple of different variables

2:07.0

for a player.

2:08.2

They each get a coefficient, which is really kind of like a multiplier.

2:13.4

So you might say if it has like three variables in it, you'd multiply passing yards by a certain multiplier,

2:19.7

touchdowns by a certain multiplier, and completion percentage by a certain multiplier.

2:25.6

And then the total of that gets you to your projection of maybe you're trying to project the players
