This is John Bachelor. I speak with colleague Victor Davis Hanson of the Hoover Institution, the author of the Second World Wars.

The story of all of the conflicts that added up to the catastrophe, 1939 and 1945.

We focus on the Russian Army, then Soviet Army, and how it fights badly, especially when it's on the attack outside of Russia.

But even in Russia, the losses are catastrophic. And yet the Russian Army persists. It wins ugly.

It wins. It outlasts its rivals, usually with population, but also with grit and an inability to back off when it has as a patriot a cause.

This applies immediately to Ukraine. And Victor observes his summation right now, his opinion of the counteroffensive and will it be successful. Here's Victor Davis Hanson.

I don't know. I've been criticized by suggesting that they weren't going to collapse, that they're where they want to be right now.

It's dug in. And with sufficient, as I said, tank traps and minefields and drones that it's going to end, they feel they will not lose as many people as Ukraine will try taking it.

We've had this euphoria in the West that the spring of fencing was going to be a patent type of scamper right through it and it didn't happen.

I don't think it can happen at the level of costs that's acceptable to the West.
