conversation with my colleague Colonel Jeff McCausen, CBS News, about the deployment of a new

weapon to Ukraine from the United States.

This strikes up to 90 miles. The question I raised to Jeff is, are we still limiting the ability of Ukraine to strike deeply

into Russia against military targets?

And what is the status on the battlefield now with the ambition of the General and Chief

to launch what can be a high-tech war, a robot war?

Jeff comments in particular on the success and the challenges for the

ground game in Ukraine. Much politics these days, much about the EU and the United States and funding, but the ground

action right now is critical as we come to spring. Here's Jeff McCausen,

To some degree, I think that is accurate, John, though we have seen the Ukrainians in the last few days as well strike Russian targets in Sevastopol Crimea.

Now they may well have used a storm shadow missile provided to them by the United Kingdom.

But clearly as well, these weapons still have a great utility

as I think the Ukrainians are trying to change

the nature of the battle right now.

Well, the situation on the front line

seems to be very much stalemated, the possibility of some effort by the Russians to now conduct our ground counter-offensive around Harkey, which I think will have limited at best success.

Ukrainians have sank, gained the upper hand in a couple of areas.
