I spoke with my colleague Gregory Coppley of Defense and Foreign Affairs

in Australia National, who was very skilled in understanding the scale of the monarchy and the Commonwealth, 56 countries.

I asked a simple question.

Was it successful? Was it successful for Charles?

Gregory's answer is complicated because we're looking at Charles's attempt to modernize a thousand-year-old tradition, Westminster Abbey, and the coronation of the king.

Here's Gregory.

I believe that King Charles was successful in relaunching the monarchy into the modern world.

I don't think he was as successful as he would have liked to have been.

I think largely because the ideology behind his plan for the new monarchy was not widely understood.

And he was doing it more or less, leading this by himself and on the fly.
