This is one of several compilations of folk and fairy tales from around the world,

put together by Scottish writer Andrew Lang and his wife, Lenora Blanch

alone.

According to Lang's notes, this version of the bronze ring hailed from the Middle East or Central Asia.

It was adapted from the book Traditions Popular de la Zie Minu

or Popular Traditions of Asia Minor

by Carnoy and Nicolare in Paris.

It tells the story of a royal family.

The king is unhappy because his garden won't grow, so he seeks out a poor gardener and invites him to the castle.

The garden becomes beautiful under his care, but in an unexpected turn the king's daughter falls in love with the poor gardener's son.

The king doesn't think it is an acceptable match but the

princess insists so the king sets up a challenge he He pits the gardener's son against a wealthy young
