This is John Bachelor speaking with Professor Harold Connolly of Rowan University, the mission specialist on Osiris Rex's probe to Bennu and the co-investigator for the Hiabusup 2 probe to Ryugu.

Both asteroids recently accomplished all of it, returned to Earth, analysis underway.

How did it get so successful?

Harold introduces us to the review process, the risk management process.

He works both with Jackson, the Japanese Space Agency, and with NASA, the American Space Agency.

And the reviews and the challenges are constant and here's

Harold to explain it and the result is great success.

Yeah so Jackson and NASA have slightly different stance on risk postures and

slightly different processes and procedures that go through.

NASA has a whole series of reviews that you put the proposal through

culminating with a final site review where everybody who's involved in a proposal is there

and all kinds of talks are given and a standing panel asks all kinds of questions and even after

you're funded you go through a whole bunch of reviews that occur that are some cases

ten days long to look at what all the issues are to actually predict as best you can with the data you have

the success criteria of the mission. And we've always been ranked pretty highly with our success.
