This is John Bachelor speaking to Anne Stevenson Yang, the author, and analyst of the Chinese

economy about excess manufacturing capacity that is a euphemism for dumping.

The Chinese practice dumping solar panels, steel,

a lot of products that have damaged the American economy by subsidizing the business, the industry dumping below market

prize dominating and driving the American version or the European version out of business.

Well, the presumption is they're going to try it again with products such as electric vehicles.

BYD is the manufacturer. And I ask, Ann, is BYD going to get away with it the way they

got away with steel and with solar panels? And Zandster is complicated because China tries to dump anywhere, not just in the US to

damage US industry, anywhere.

Here's Anne Stevenson Yang, author of the new book Wild Ride, which is a short history of the opening

and closing of the Chinese economy.

I really haven't looked at the composition of

B.Y. D. exports recently and that's that's because

honestly I have fairly low regard for BYU if you look at the the kinds of

electrics you know BYUd dominates the market in China for electric vehicles, but those are really very substandard products.

BYD has electric vehicles that compete with Tesla, but those are much more highly priced.

So this idea that BYD is just going to overwhelm the international market.

The places that they export their sort of low-grade vehicles to are places like Russia,

and Africa and Southeast Asia.

So, you know, are they really going to compete in Europe and the US?
