This is John Batcher, a conversation with my colleague Professor Jim Holmes of the Naval War College

about the deployment of a new mobile system by the US Army to lose, the Northern Most Island in the Philippines.

A ferocious deployment of a missile that's meant to reach out, as Jim says, and touch the Chinese PLA or its Coast Guard or its fishing vessels all

one fleet intimidating the Philippines. This is a mobile unit and Jim the a product of recent conversations between the new President Marcos, President Biden, and

Prime Minister Kishida of Japan.

This is the defense of the Philippines from the presumed attack of the PLA in the near future.

Yeah, I think it's a beautiful thing.

The Army has actually been working with the Navy to

to field the system for a few years they call it the typhon I mean it's a which is kind of the

glitzy name of the mid-range capability but what it does what it does is

basically let Army units deploy two islands.

Chief me in the first island chain seems to be the idea such as

Palawan where we're currently having our annual exercise with the

Philippine military.

But what the system does is it allows the Army to detect tracked and target ships

using Navy missiles, using the SM6 missile, which was originally a surface to air missile was then

repurposed for surface to surface missions from ships and now has been again

repurposed for land use and also the venerable tomahawk missile which we know from all the way back in

1991 in Desert Storm and has remained a workhorse system
