This is John Batchett, conversation with my colleague Henry Sakhowski, the Executive Director of the Non-Proliferation Policy Education Center, about the immediate future and the contest between the powers, China, Russia, and the United States.

Non-nuclear missiles, that is missiles that do not have a nuclear warhead and are meant to

destroy nodes, communication nodes, internet, water, the infrastructure

of a culture as well as military strikes. That is the immediate future. Medium

range and short-range missiles now in hand. Long-range under development, we

believe, intercontinental non-nuclear missiles.

What does this mean for the future?

Henry describes very carefully, it means space is vital to targeting to maintaining

the target list of non-nuclear missiles as they traverse intercontinentally.

Yeah. Space is going to be very important to moving all that information to the missile

so that it can find its target and do so in a timely fashion. Fair enough.

That's going to make control of space a major contest and you raise the point of defenses. We tend to put

a tremendous amount of emphasis on active defenses.

And okay, it makes sense.

But I think what's going to come into fashion
