This is John Batchelor, conversation with Jonathan Shanzer, Executive Director of Foundation

for the Defense of Democracy, about the tangle that is Syria, the darkness visible of the

Levant. Jonathan asked the major question, and I repeat it, is this a new Syria, or is this ISIS

with a mask?

Yeah, and I think this is the big question, and I think we don't know how to answer all

of it yet.

You got to remember that Abu Muhammad al-Jalani used to run the Nusra front.

And right now, as we understand it, there are a lot of figures, foreign fighters, that have now

gone on to populate key positions in the Syrian government. This is an organization, the Nusra

Front, now known as HTS, that both runs Syria, but also once collaborated with the Islamic State. They took part in some of the massacres.
